The town of Koroni was originally founded by refugees from Asine (Argolid), but there are no remains today of this early time. Flourishing in the Byzantine period, Koroni was captured in 1206 by the Venetians. During their nearly 300 years lasting reign they extended the harbour and the fortress, which became one of the largest fortifications in the Mediterranean and one of the "Eyes of Venice" - the other one being Methoni. From 1500 until 1828 Koroni was under Turkish control - apart from short Genuese and Venetian interludes. In 1828 Koroni was then liberated by the French general Maison. Today it is a quite tranquil town with narrow stepped alleys and a number of tavernas and small shops near the harbour. |
